MT. PLEASANT — If anything was apparent on Monday night in Mt. Pleasant, it was that the Mt. Pleasant boys basketball team was going to make it tough on the Tigers of New London.
They did just that as Mt. Pleasant put on a defensive clinic for a 66-27 win over New London.
The Panthers leaped out to a big lead through the first quarter. Mt. Pleasant used its height advantage well, creating a plethora of second chance opportunities.
Couple the offensive rebounding with the outside shooting of Ian Reid, who hit a trifecta of deep balls in the opening period, and the Panthers lead quickly escalated to 20-4 at the end of the first buzzer.
Meanwhile, the Tigers struggled to get the ball in the bucket on the other end.
The Tigers scored just four points in the opening period off a two from Brigham Porter and another pair from London Franklin.
New London was able to find some momentum on the offensive end in the second off the fast break as Franklin and Porter both secured some easy buckets.
However, things didn’t shift on the other end and the Panthers dropped in another 18 in the second frame to make it 38-16 at the half.
Out of the break, the Panthers continued to dominate. Mt. Pleasant added another 19 to its total while holding New London to just seven.
In all, the Panthers gave up just 11 points in the second half.
Aiden Humble finished with 16 points for the Panthers, while London Franklin tallied 14 for New London.
Mt. Pleasant improves to 1-7 with the win, while New London drops to 0-9.
