KEOKUK — Mt. Pleasant hit the road on Friday for a Class 3A District 5 clash with the Chiefs of Keokuk.
It was a tough out for the Panthers (0-7) as a slim deficit at the half turned into a runaway victory for Keokuk (4-3) 47-26.
Mt. Pleasant came ready to play.
The Panthers gave up just one score in the first quarter and made a pair of stops of fourth down through the half to keep the Chiefs out of the end zone.
In the second quarter, Mt. Pleasant was able to knot the game at 7-7 after Payton Walker connected with a streaking Phoenix Watson for an 86-yard touchdown.
However, a Keokuk interception turned the tide of the game as the Chief’s Brenton Hoard cross the goal line to make it 14-7 at the half.
Keokuk kept it’s foot on the pedal the rest of the way out.
The Chiefs went on to score 19 unanswered points in the third quarter.
Mt. Pleasant scored 19 themselves in the fourth, but 14 more from Keokuk all but sealed it.
Payton Walker went 12-for-20 in the game for 178 yards and one touchdown.
He also led on the ground with 111 yards and three touchdowns.
On the receiving side, Phoenix Watson tallied 108 yards on four catches with one score. Payson Coleman posted 69 yards on five catches. Carson Andreasen had 25 yards, Cooper Coleman 15 yards and Logan Borders nine.
Walker totaled a team-high 6.5 tackles in the loss. Max Sloat finished with five.
