The area’s prep bowlers were spread out all over the state for district bowling meets on Monday and Tuesday. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union meets were held on Day 1, and the Iowa High School Athletic Associations’ boys meets were on Day 2.
Mt. Pleasant had quite the day at the Class 2A girls state qualifying meet in Oskaloosa. The Panthers sent three individuals on to next week’s state meet.
Addie McGehearty, Bethany Drury and Kya Goodrich took up three of the Top-7 spots at the district meet. The trio took home three of the eight individual qualifying tickets up for grabs.
McGhearty was nothing but consistent in her three games. She bowled a 190 in her opener, a 204 in her second game and a 193 in her third game to finish the day at 587.
Drury had a fantastic start to the day, bowling a 224 in her first game. She went down to 149 in Game 2, but notched another 200-plus performance by rolling a 208 in Game 3. She was one of just three bowlers to go above 200 in two games at the meet.
Like Drury, Goodrich started the meet out on fire. She bowled a 211 to kick things off, took a dip with a 154 in her second game and finished the day out at 190 to qualify for state by just two pins.
The Mt. Pleasant girls came as close as any Union area team when it came to the team race. The Panthers finished just 58 pins back of second-place Oskaloosa, bowling a 2,640 for fourth place out of eight teams.
The Panther boys were in Oskaloosa one day later. Southeast Conference champion Alec Payne bowled a 571 to finish 26th individually, with only eight qualifying out of the district. Keagan Ellington and Titus Reno went 525 514 respectively, but the Panthers couldn’t send anyone through.
The opposite was true at Davis County, where Washington’s Caleb Zieglowsky punched his ticket to represent the school at the state meet, bowling 600 for fifth place overall.
Zieglowsky bowled a 195 in his first game, a 193 in his second game and a 212 in his third game to finish the day at 600. That gave him a 24-pin cushion over the ninth-place finisher.
Zieglowsky was the only Demon boy above 500. Kelton Burke’s 473 was the next best individual score for Washington.
On the girls’ side, the Demons failed to push anyone through, as Emma Chenoweth rolled a 467 to put her 43 pins away from state qualification. Among the eight qualifiers, however, was Sigourney-Keota’s Jayden Montgomery, who bowled a 168, a 189 and a 171 to finish at 528, good enough for fifth place overall.
SK also had one bowler go through on the boys’ side, as Wells Clark punched his ticket to the state meet with a 658 at the Camanche boys’ qualifier. Clark bowled an incredible 259 in his first game before finishing out at 226 and 173.
The Fairfield bowlers were in Osceola to compete in a six-team district meet hosted by Clarke. The Trojan girls finished fifth in the team standings, and the boys ended the meet in third.
Only four individuals qualified out of the six-team meet. Fairfield had four bowlers over 500 on the boys’ side, but nobody qualified for state. Dalton Drish bowled a 547. Ethan Cass finished at 539. Dylan Adam ended at 531, and Dayson Workman rounded out the Top-4 Trojans with a 517.
On the girls’ side, Emma Wendland led the Trojans with a 379, and Addison Harris was close behind at 375. Neither of those scores were good enough to earn a ticket to the state meet.
The IGHSAU girls tournament will take place in Waterloo. The trio of Panthers will take part in the Class 2A individual tournament on Monday, Feb. 19. Montgomery’s Class 1A individual tournament is on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
On the boys’ side, Zieglowsky and Clark will both compete in the Class 1A boys’ individual meet on Wednesday, Feb. 21. That tournament also will be in Waterloo.
