MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant volleyball was looking on point after its first set against visiting Albia on Thursday night.
The Panthers took the first against the Lady Dees, but things began to go errant through the next three sets as Albia stole three straight to take the match win 3-1, 25-21, 23-25, 23-25 and 22-25.
Everything went right for the Panthers early in set one.
The Panthers raced out to a 9-2 lead thanks to a 5-1 and a 4-1 run capped off by a pair of aces from Addison Clark.
Albia continued to battle as it got right back into it.
What followed was a 6-0 swing from Albia, in which they cut it to one, 9-8, and eventually tied it up at 10-10 after a two touch by the Panthers.
However, the Panthers would never trail.
Mt. Pleasant extended its lead to as high as four points the rest of the way, with the final margin coming at 22-18.
Albia came as close as two at 22-20 and 23-21, but Mt. Pleasant was able to hang on off an Alex Scott kill and an ace from Addison Peck.
Set two was as tight as the first. The two squads tied seven times through the frame.
The largest lead by either team was just three points, held by the Panthers at 15-12 and then the Lady Dees at 23-20.
Mt. Pleasant held the advantage for much of the set, lead from 9-8 all the way to 19-18.
But it was Albia who had the run when it mattered most.
After a hit that sailed long by the Panthers gave the Lady Dees a 20-19 advantage, they would never give it up.
Mt. Pleasant tied it on the next point off a service error and faced just a one point deficit at match point 24-23, but Albia secured the point to knot the match at 1-1.
In set three, the Panthers saw another late lead dissipate.
At the tail end of the third, Mt. Pleasant held onto a solid 19-14 advantage and then a 23-19 lead with just two points needed for the win, but they couldn’t keep it.
The Lady Dees slowly chipped away, before scoring the final six points to stun Panthers in the third.
In what was the final set of the evening, it was more of the same.
Mt. Pleasant was right there in the end. The Panthers and Lady Dees were tied at 22-22 after a 3-0 from the Panthers, but Albia followed with three of its own to end it.
Alex Scott finished with 15 kills for the Panthers and Addison Clark 12. Savannah Slobodnik had five.
Abby Carthey tallied 23 assists. Carthey also led with 18 digs, while Scott had 17.
Clark and Scott also notched a pair of aces.
