WASHINGTON - Only a sophomore, but Alex Murphy is expanding her game and helping the Demons improve.
The Washington girls basketball team recorded its second win of the season, 36-35 over visiting Burlington, Friday behind Murphy's double-double. She put up 10 points and took down 11 rebounds. Both figures are notable because the point total is a career high and the rebound total is her fourth consecutive game with double-digit boards.
'I thought she played really well,” Washington head coach Shannon Rugg said while noting other players made a difference as well. Anna Nacos scored 11 points with four steals and four assists. Kaylin Long was 5-of-6 on free throws and 'was really aggressive attacking the basket. Makenna Conrad played their best player man-to-man and held her to six points. An outstanding job by her.” Burlington's Alexis Standard scored 20 points in the teams first meeting, a 53-52 Demons win.
'We played a box-and-one defense on Standard and really gave them some problems with it in the first half,” Rugg said. 'I thought the girls played extremely hard and executed on offense pretty good.”
Washington hosts Fort Madison Friday.
