Nacos, Murphy help Demon win

WASHINGTON - The Washington girls basketball team notched its second win over Burlington this season, both one-point nail-biters, with a 36-35 victory Friday.
Anna Nacos had 11 points and Alex Murphy 10 in the win. Kaylin Long added five points and Ava Turner four.
Washington led 14-9 after the first quarter, 18-13 at halftime, but the game was tied at 26 after three quarters and the Demons trailed for much of the fourth.
No. 15 Warriors over Warriors, then Comets
KEOSAUQUA - Thursday Isabelle Manning poured in 27 points to lead a 58-48 comeback win for the newly ranked (No. 15 Class 2A) Warriors over the same-named Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division rival Warriors of WACO.
Friday, Manning notched 34 points and Kadence Nusbaum scored 11 with five assists in a 60-39 win over Cardinal. Manning pulled down 13 rebounds and Ella Jirak had nine.
WACO jumped on top of Van Buren County, taking an early 13-7 lead, but trailed the home team 16-13 at the end of the first quarter. Trailing 17-13 in the second quarter, WACO went on a 12-5 run for a 25-22 lead. VBC answered with seven straight points for a 29-25 lead but didn't score again and WACO had a 30-29 lead at halftime.
Grace Coble scored 10 of her Waco-high 16 points in the first half. Ella Kissell scored 11 while Aubri Garnsey and Molly McLaughlin combined for 13. The visitors kept the lead until Van Buren tied it at 37, then went on a 18-4 run that spanned the end of the third quarter (46-39) and the first half of the fourth when it was 55-41.
'The good thing about the game was the rest of the team scored more than Isabelle,” VBC head coach Matt Zietler said of Thursday's game.
Manning added 10 rebounds, two assists and four steals against WACO while teammate Ella Jirak had 14 points and eight rebounds. Nusbaum produced eight rebounds, four assists, five steals and a block.
No. 6 Bellevue beats Mid-Prairie
WELLMAN - The Golden Hawks had a 12-5 lead after the first quarter and 21-17 at halftime but scored 13 points in the second half to lose 47-34 to Class 2A's sixth-ranked Comets in a home River Valley Conference game.
Maddie Nonnenmann poured in 19 points with nine rebounds to lead the Golden Hawks.
New London can't hang on against Danville
DANVILLE - New London threatened to beat rival Danville on its own home floor with a 29-25 halftime lead, but the Bears stormed back in the second half and put the Tigers away 62-50. It was New London's third-straight loss in South Division play.
Highland falls to Mediapolis
MEDIAPOLIS - The Bullettes shot down the Huskies 63-31 in a North game.
Dani Laughlin and Sarah Burton each scored 12 points for the Huskies.
Keota drops a pair
KEOTA - The visitors from Lynnville-Sully gave its South Iowa Cedar League foe Keota a 75-20 defeat Thursday.
'It was a very tough game,” Keota head coach Jeff Sprouse said. 'They took us to the woodshed. We had too many turnovers, and just outmuscled and outscored.”
Taylor Kindred had eight rebounds and Sky Weber five with two assists while Madison Scott had eight points for Keota.
Trailing 31-12 at halftime Friday against SICL foe Iowa Valley, Keota outscored the visitors 20-9 in the second half but lost 40-32.
'We missed 11 layups and turned it over 10 times in the first half,” Sprouse said. 'The second half was better as we cut down on mistakes. The hole was just too large to overcome, but the girls played with much better urgency.”
Scott and Nicole Clarahan had seven points each while Macie McDonald scored four with nine rebounds. Clarahan added seven rebounds, three steals and three assists.
WACO scares No. 8 (3A) West Burlington
WEST BURLINGTON - For the second game in a row, WACO nearly upset a ranked team, but the Warriors were once again unable to hold on in the end, falling 62-54 against the eighth-ranked Falcons.
Just one game after leading a ranked Van Buren County squad at halftime, WACO trailed 32-31 against the South Division leaders at halftime. The Warriors trailed by just three, at 56-53, with two minutes left, but West BUrlington pulled away late.
Ellah Kissell scored 18 points to lead the Warriors in the loss. Morgan Graber and Grace Coble scored 14 points apiece. Molly McLaughlin and Aubri Garnsey tallied three points apiece, and Lindsey Roth finished with two.
10th-ranked Wolves blow past Wapello in 2nd half
WINFIELD - No. 10 (1A) Winfield-Mt. Union outlasted another North Division team, beating the Arrors 48-34 despite holding just a three-point halftime lead.
Farrah Nelson finished the night with a double double, tallying 10 points and 11 rebounds. Keetyn Townsley scored 10 points off the bench. Melina Oepping finished with seven, and both Jami Wilkerson and Bradie Buffington ended the night with six.
Peiffer leads Pekin
PACKWOOD - Kaylee Peiffer's 12 points helped the Panthers survive visiting Davis County 40-39 Thursday.
Sophie Wittrock (five rebounds, five steals) and Kerrigan Pope (eight rebounds, seven steals) added 10 points each for Pekin and Erika Coleman had eight points and 12 rebounds.
Pekin took a 13-8 lead after a quarter and 26-17 by the half, but it was tied at 28 to start the fourth.
