It was a rare event for the Washington girls? golf team on Monday.
Demon junior Deanna Peiffer and freshman Sarah Nacos each had a strong showing at a tournament at Flint Hills Golf Course in Burlington, carding even-par 71s at the meet.
?I?ve been doing this for 35, 36 years, and the even-par rounds you can count on one hand,? Washington girls? golf head coach Leonard Kull said. ?To have two in a big tournament is phenomenal.?
The 71s were the top scores at the meet, as Peiffer and Nacos shared the honor. Those low scores also helped the Demons take the tournament crown out of 12 teams with a score of 324.
Mt. Pleasant took second at the meet with a 346 while Fairfield was third with a 355. The other schools in attendance were 5A schools from the Mississippi River area.
Of the Top 10 individual scores, Kull noted that seven were from Washington?s Southeast Conference.
Demon senior Sarah Waite had a season-best performance, turning in a card of 86, while Brenna Burlingame was fourth on the team with a 96.
Megan Strabala scored a 100 at the meet, while Meredith Lumberg shot a 112 for the Demons, who put together one of their best performances this season.
?I don?t know if we can shoot much lower,? Kull said. ?Those scores are just lights out. We can strive to shoot lower, but we shouldn?t get discouraged if we don?t shoot at that level, because that would be extremely difficult to maintain. The putts won?t fall all the time. If we can maintain a high standard with our one and two scores, then have three and four pick up a little bit, that?ll put us in a good place.?
Washington will travel to Ottumwa on Thursday for an invitational that will start at noon.
