PELLA ? Pekin graduate Emma Nelson, a member of the Central College women?s cross country team, turned in a breakthrough performance at the Grinnell Les Duke Invitational on Sept. 8.
The Central junior finished 24th overall (24:34) to help the Dutch place fifth in the 11-team field. Nelson was the third Central runner to cross the finish line.
?Emma ran a really strong race,? said associate head coach Stephen Fyfe. ?She decided to take a risk and go for it at the four-kilometer mark and it paid off.?
Nelson was the winner of the squad?s Most Improved Runner Award in 2011. She is one of 11 letter winners, along with Fairfield High School graduate Amanda Melcher, to return to the squad in 2012.
