NEW LONDON — The New London and Winfield-Mount Union volleyball teams battled it out at the Tigers’ home tournament, just days before the final full week of the regular season.
New London and WMU each finished in the Top-4. The Tigers took second overall, and the Wolves finished fourth.
The Tigers and Wolves battled in the de facto pool play championship after each team ousted Louisa-Muscatine. New London opened the tournament with a win, and WMU had to grind out a three-set thriller, beating the Falcons 15-13 after splitting the earlier sets.
New London ousted WMU for first place in the pool. The Tigers beat the Wolves 21-19 in the first set, and ran away with a 21-17 second-set win.
That matched New London up with a tough West Burlington squad in the championship. It was the 12th-ranked (2A) Falcons who got the better of the Tigers in that one, winning 25-6 and 25-10.
“They were doing what they needed to for the pool play games,” said New London head coach Jackie Housman. “With this game, everything kind of broke down.”
It was the first meeting between the two teams this season. The Tigers will play the Falcons this week as well, playing them Tuesday.
“I wish we could have given them more of a fight,” Housman said. “But I’m proud of how they played today.”
In the third place match, the Wolves hung close in Set 1 against Notre Dame. The Nikes took Game 1, 25-19, and finished out Game 2 with a 25-14 victory.
“We’re working on our consistency,” said WMU head coach David Pieart. “We can be defensively brilliant at times and offensively brilliant at times, but we’re struggling a bit to connect them within a game.”
New London is 4-14 overall and 0-4 in conference play heading into this week. WMU is 10-9 on the year with a 3-2 league record.
