NEW LONDON - It’s going to take a lot to take down New London.
The Van Buren County boys couldn’t solve the undefeated Tigers in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference game on Tuesday. The Tigers toppled the Warriors 10-0 in six innings to win their sixth game in a row to start the season.
“We knew this ball club was good,” said Van Buren County head coach Chad Scott. “When you think about the top of the conference, you think about these guys.”
The Tigers scored eight runs in the first three innings, plating two in teh first, one in the second and five in the third. New London finished the game with two in the sixth.
The Tigers had seven different batters record hits on the day. Kooper Schulte went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and two RBIs to lead the way.
“Some teams kind of slough off after you get through the five and six spots,” said New London head coach Brad Helmerson. “We feel our one through nine can really hit the ball.”
New London’s Carter Allen and Tucker Gibbar combined for a five-hit shutout.
Two of Van Buren’s five hits came off the bat of Ryan Wolf, who went 2-for-3 with doubles. Casey Yochum went 1-for-2 with a double.
Yochum started on the mound for Van Buren, giving up eight runs (five earned) on eight hits and five walks, while striking out one batter. Owen Loeffler threw 2.2 innings in relief.
“We did some good things out there today, but one too many mistakes,” said Scott. “Good teams take advantage of those.”
New London is now 6-0 on the year. Van Buren County fell to 3-5.
