KEOSAUQUA ? With a big first quarter in both games, Van Buren routed the New London boys? and girls? basketball teams, which were on the road last night.
The Warriors defeated the Tiger boys by a score of 83-33, after taking down the Tiger girls, 63-18.
In the girls? game, the Warriors held New London to only two points in the first quarter while putting 21 on the board themselves.
The Tigers managed seven points in each of the second and third quarters, but again scored only two in the final quarter.
Again, the team was putting shots up, but they weren?t finding their mark. The Tiger girls shot only 17 percent from the field, going seven-for-39 on the night. They hit one of seven three-point attempts and made three of eight free throws.
Mahala Jewett led the team with eight points on the night, nearly half of the Tiger total. Bria Mears added three points. Sami Koontz and Caitlin Rice each scored two points, while Breanna Stevens, Charley Lorber and Addie Lounsbury scored one point apiece.
Mears and Lorber each pulled down a team-high four rebounds. Rice, Stevens and Jewett grabbed three boards apiece.
Rice and Jewett each had a steal.
The girls are now 1-4.
In the boys? game, Van Buren lit up the board with 34 points in the first quarter, holding the Tigers to only six.
New London added nine points in the second quarter and broke into double figures with 12 points in the third.
The Tigers dropped back down to six points, however, in the final quarter of the game, and they also dropped to a 1-4 record on the season.
As a team, the Tiger boys shot 26 percent from the floor (13-for-50), including four of 14 three-pointers (28 percent). They were three-for-five (60 percent) from the free-throw line.
Tristan Kadel led the team with eight points, followed by Shawn Strothman with seven, and Josh Francis added six.
Cameron Watson was the top rebounder, grabbing seven boards. Strothman pulled down five.
Tylor Heubner, Logan Stevens and Justin Hill had two steals each. Watson had the team?s only assist, while Strothman and Hill each recorded a block.
The Tiger teams will play again Friday when they host Danville, starting at 6 p.m.
