The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released its fifth round of weekly volleyball rankings last Thursday. For the fourth consecutive week, the Union area is represented on the list by the Tigers of New London and the Golden Hawks of Mid-Prairie.
New London, previously No. 10 in Class 1A, dropped down one spot to No. 11 in this weeks rankings.
Last week, the Tigers took part in the North Mahaska tournament. The Tigers went 2-2 in the tournament, sweeping Tri-County and Lynnville-Sully, but fell to Pella Christian in a pair of matches on the day.
The Tigers participated in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Tournament to end last week. New London’s performance in the tournament is sure to affect the week 6 rankings. The conference tournament featured No. 5 (Class 1A) Burlington Notre Dame, No. 12 (Class 1A) Holy Trinity and No. 8 (Class 2A) West Burlington as well. Winfield-Mt. Union also competed. The Wolves were previously ranked No. 15 in week one. WACO also entered the tournament undefeated.
Mid-Prairie, who previously held the No. 15 ranking in Class 3A, moves up two spots to No. 13 this week.
The Golden Hawks have been playing some great volleyball as of late. They have played some tough matches in the past couple of weeks, taking on No. 6 (Class 3A) West Liberty. The Golden Hawks went down to wire in nearly every set, but fell to the Comets 3-1.
Next up, the Golden Hawks took on No. 13 (Class 2A) Wilton. Mid-Prairie swept the Beavers in three sets. They then capped off their week of matches with a dominant three set victory over Durant.
