NEW LONDON — New London baseball’s season came to a halt on Wednesday night in the Tiger’s Class 1A district semifinal against No. 8 Notre Dame.
Despite a late afternoon shower that moved the game from Notre Dame’s Winegard Field to New London, it just wasn’t the defending Class 1A state champions night as they were topped 12-0.
Coupled with efficient at-bat’s by the Nikes, the Tigers struggled in the field amassing nine errors through the contest.
Notre Dame was quick to put runs on the board.
The Nikes scored in the opening inning after leadoff hitter Landry Haberichter reached second on a fielders error and then later crossed home on a throwing error to put the Nikes up 1-0.
Regardless of the errors, New London was able to limit the Nikes to just one run with Brendan Richey at the helm, but the game was flipped on its side in the second.
The Nikes blew the game open in the second with seven runs on three hits and three Tiger errors.
Notre Dame’s Caden Schwenker gave the Nikes the biggest jolt of the inning with a bases loaded three RBI triple.
By the end of the second, New London trailed 8-0.
From then on out and after a scoreless third, Notre Dame went on to score four in the fourth to end it.
Memphis Watson and Cale Westerbeck each notched one hit for New London.
The Tigers end their season with a record of 8-15.
Notre Dame (24-6) moves on to face Moravia (23-7) at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the district final.
