New London finally loses, bounces right back

NEW LONDON - Going into Thursday night, No. 9 New London was the remaining member of the Class 1A undefeated list. When the night was done, that list was empty.
The Tigers fell 4-0 to West Burlington, a team New London had mercy ruled earlier this year. One night later, they were able to take out some frustration with a 15-3 five-inning beat down of Anamosa.
“I think we got a little too comfortable with our position,” said New London junior Carter Allen, who was on the mound on Friday against Anamosa. “You’re not supposed to get comfortable. You’re supposed to come hungry.”
Allen cruised to a complete-game victory, giving up three runs (two earned) over five innings of work. He struck out two betters and walked just one.
Freshman Brenden Richey went 1-for-2 with a team-leading three RBIs to pace the Tgiers. Tucker Gibbar was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Seth Bailey went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Kooper Schulte knocked in two runs. Both Josh Catala and Hecniel Rodriguez finished the night with two hits and an RBI, and Ryan Richey knocked one.
“One of the things we’ve talked about is how you respond after a loss,” said New London head coach Brad Helmerson. “Tonight, they responded well.”
THURSDAY
Van Buren nips Notre Dame
BURLINGTON - Van Buren County scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to upend Notre Dame 6-5 in Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division action.
The Warriors had rallied from a 2-1 deficit to score four runs in the fourth and take a 5-2 lead. Notre Dame scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie it up, but Van Buren had just enough gas to come back with one final run.
Cardinal creams Danville
DANVILLE - Tatum Telfer pitched six scoreless innings in Cardinal’s 8-0 win over Danville in a SEISC South Division road game.
The Comets’ offense scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Drake Durflinger went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the win, and both Dawson Lewis and Kaleb Figueroa knocked in two runs.
Pekin loses nail-biter
MEDIAPOLIS - Chase Stansberry gave up just two runs (one earned) in a complete game on the pitcher’s mound, but Pekin didn’t have enough offense to get past Mediapolis in a 2-1 loss.
Pekin had just two hits all night. Brady Latcham was one-for-4 with an RBI, and Colton Comstcok went 1-for-4 as well.
Hillcrest heaves Columbus
KALONA - Hillcrest Academy busted out for 12 runs in the first inning of a 17-1 four-inning victory over Columbus in SEISC North Division action.
Aiden Krabill pitched a four-inning one-hitter, striking out six batters in the process. London Schrock led the Ravns at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple, a double and five RBIs. Jace Rempel knocked in three runs and Eli Ours knocked in two.
Late runs lift Mid-Prairie
GOOSE LAKE - No. 7 (2A) Mid-Prairie trailed 3-2 after three innings at Northeast, but the Golden Hawks rallied back to win 15-8, using one run in the fourth, eight in the fifth, one more in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Aidan Rath had another monster night for hte Golden Hawks, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Will Cavanaugh was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and Collin Miller went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Keota pops Plainsmen
KEOTA - Keota’s Colten Clarahan struck out 12 batters over a five inning start and the Eagles flew past Belle Plaine 7-3.
Clarahan got it done at the plate as well, going 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the team. Caden Clarahan, Bryce Greiner, Carson Sprouse and Max Johnson all knocked in one run.
Heartbreak for WMU
LONE TREE - Winfield-Mount Union lost an instant classic at Lone Tree, falling 11-10 on a walk-off which capped a four-run Lone Tree bottom of the eighth inning.
WMU trailed 7-5 entering the seventh inning but rallied to tie it at 7-7. The Wolves scored three in the eighth to take a 10-7 lead, but Lone Tree punched right back with an eighth-inning four-spot.
FRIDAY
Pekin fries Falcons
PACKWOOD - On senior night, Pekin knocked off SEISC North rival Louisa-Mucatine 9-1.
Levi Coleman threw six innings for the Panthers, giving up one run to earn the win on the mound. Brady Latcham was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Chandler Stuff knocked in two runs.
Keota runs past Columbus
COLUMBUS JUNCTION - Keota was all over Columbus in a nonconference game. The Eagles rolled to a 19-0 victory.
Colten Clarahan had a ridiculous game, going 3-for-4 with a double and seven RBIs to lead the squad. Sam Sieren, Brady Duwa, Bryce Greiner and Caden Clarahan all knocked in two, and Cole Kindred threw a five-inning one-hitter on the mound.
Columbus’ one hit came from Mason Hodges, who finished the day 1-for-2 with a single.
Cardinal shuts down Central Lee
ELDON - Landon Becker gave up just one run over seven innings, while striking out eight, to lead Cardinal to a 4-1 SEISC South win over Central Lee.
The Comets scored all four of their runs over the first four innings. Blaine Bryant led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Drake Durflinger had one RBI.
Highland slugs past Hillcrest
RIVERSIDE - Highland’s bats were working early in an 11-5 SEISC North win over Hillcrest Academy. The Huskies scored 10 runs in the first three innings to open up a lead they would never relinquish.
Luke Miller was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Highland. Chase Schultz picked up the win on the moudn.
Hillcrest was led by London Schrock, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
