New London girls 5th at state golf tournament
Phillips leads Tigers with 89, 12 back of 1st; Sigourney 10th

AMES — The first day of June was the first day of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union state golf meets. Tuesday in Class 1A, New London was holding steady in fifth place at the Ames Golf and Country Club. Sigourney was 10th.
New London’s team score was 395, four strokes ahead of Newell-Fonda and a mere two strokes out of fourth place where Boyer Valley sits with a 393.
Grundy Center with a 372 was 30 strokes behind in second place with Central Lyon third at 377.
Bishop Garrigan was leading with a team score of 342 behind Kelly Baade’s third-place score of 8-over-par 79.
Madeline Streicher of Edgewood-Colesburg and Greenlee Smock of Lynnville-Sully were tied atop the leaderboard with the score of 77.
Taylor Phillips was the low New London Tiger, shooting an 89, which was tied for 11th overall. Teammate Sophie Malott carded one of two 99s for 32nd. Hannah Ortberg carded a 101, which was tied for 37th. In a tie for 55th was Emma Nye’s 106. Tied for 58th was Saige Barron’s 108 and in 71st was Isabelle Nye, who carded a 119.
Lily Schmidt led Sigourney with a 96, then Maddie Hornback had 100, Sidney Morse 110 and Claire Svenby 114.
