DANVILLE — The New London girls ran into a buzz saw on Tuesday night. Rusty from a week of no practices, the Tigers had to go on the road to play a red-hot Danville team.
The Bears, who came in riding a streak of seven-straight blowout wins, recorded another one, beating New London 89-12.
“We haven’t been in our gym for over a week,” said New London girls basketball coach Terri Hester-Mathews. “No excuses, but we just played like we haven’t played.“
The Tigers were shutout in the first quarter, trailing 28-0 at halftime. Morgan Jones and Mylee Miller each scored in the second half, but the Bears took a 52-4 lead into the break.
“We just couldn’t hit anything tonight,” Hester-Mathews said. “We probably didn’t even take 10 shots in the first half.”
New London scored just once in the third quarter, trailing 72-6 into the final period. Sophie Malott knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
Malott’s six points led the Tigers in the loss. Jones finished with four points and three assists. Miller ended the night with two points.
The New London girls fell to 1-12 overall and 1-7 in Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division play with the loss.
