NEW LONDON - The Washington wrestling team was a late edition to Thursday night's wrestling triangular at New London. The Tigers were scheduled to take on Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union in a dual, but the Demons joined the party less than 48 hours before start time to turn it into a Union coverage area triangular.
New London would win that triangular, beating Columbus/W-MU 38-36 and topping Washington 42-22. Columbus/W-MU finished at 1-1 with a 57-15 win over the Demons.
The New London vs. Columbus/W-MU dual was first. The Tigers picked up an early technical fall from Marcel Lopez at 126 pounds, and had pins from Dominic Lopez (145 pounds), Josh Glendening (152 pounds), Boden Pickle (182 pounds) and Carter Allen (220 pounds). Columbus/W-MU stayed close with four wins by forfeit and pins by Will Hotz at 170 pounds and Ty Scorpil at 106 pounds.
Columbus/W-MU bounced right back with a 57-15 defeat of Washington. The Wildcats had a pin from Triston Miller at 126 pounds, and Scorpil had his second pin of the day at 106 pounds.
'That (second dual) really helped us take a step forward from where we were in that last meet,” said Columbus/W-MU co-coach Joel Keller. 'We could see where we were making mistakes, and we were able to come together as a team and execute.”
In the final dual of the night, New London was able to roll with the help of four wins via forfeit. The Tigers also had pins by Dominic Lopez at 145 pounds, Michael Raines at 160 pounds and Currey Jacobs at 195 pounds. Washington did pick up a pin from Chase Greiner at 170 pounds and a major decision from Ayden Frazer at 182 pounds.
'We definitely have a better tournament team than we do a dual team,” said New London head coach Mark Chiri. 'But as long as we pair up right with people, we're in every dual.”
Chiri added that he thought the Washington team was very athletic, but just inexperienced at some weight.
Although they didn't pick up a win, that inexperienced Demon bunch was thankful to get some matches in. Washington was able to sneak into the triangular after head coach Brent Van Weelden answered a message from Chiri on Tuesday night, when Chiri asked for one more team to come wrestle on Thursday.
'All our meets this weekend were canceled, so we're very happy that New London let us come in and get a couple of duals in,” Van Weelden said. 'We're pretty young and inexperienced, and anytime we can get more and more experience, that's what we want to do.”
