A promising regular season for the area’s prep girls golfers came to fruition in the regional meets on Wednesday.
Two area teams and one individual moved on to the state meet in Classes 1A and 2A action, setting up a busy championship week around Iowa golf courses.
In Wapello, New London had to do everything they could to hold off West Branch for the regional title. The Tigers shot a 371 to win the regional championship by six points. Both teams earned team spots at the Class 1A state meet.
New London had a fantastic outing from its Top-3, which took up three of the Top-4 spots overall. Taylor Phillips shot an 87 to take second individually and lead New London. Emma Nye finished third overall, at 89, and Sophie Malott was right behind Nye with a 90, for fourth.
Emma Busby shot a 105 to become New London’s fourth scorer on the day. Stevey Wintermeyer ended the meet at 109, and Isabelle Nye shot 111.
Highland took third place as a team, shooting a 404. The Huskies were 27 points off a state qualification, but junior Kelsi Cerny will be going to state individually.
Cerny shot a 92 to take the last of the Top-6 spots, which automatically qualify a player. She beat out BGM’s Aurelia Roudabush by two strokes for the last ticket.
Highland’s Adisyn Prottsman shot 99. Adeline Krotz ended at 106. Danika Kraus shot 107. Emerson Shultz shot 27, and Jenna Waters ended at 122.
Winfield-Mount Union shot 451, for fifth. Alli Humphreys and Isabel Kann led the Wolves, as each shot a 109.
WMU’s Anna Anderson finished at 114. Kaelyn Townsley shot 119. Afton Wilkerson ended at 123, and Ava Hagge shot 126.
Mid-Prairie also will be making a return trip to state after shooting a 367 in Williamsburg, winning the regional championship by 10 strokes over West Marshall.
The Golden Hawks showed off their depth at the meet, but it didn’t hurt to have two of the Top-3 players. Gabi Robertson shot an 87, for second place, and Kylie Reinier finished at 89, for third.
Madi Davidson ended the meet at 92 for the Golden Hawks. Elliot Debler shot 99. Addison English finished at 102, and Alexa Huber shot 105.
The state girls golf tournaments take place on May 25 and 26. New London and Cerny will be playing at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone. Mid-Prairie will be at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.
