Tigers threaten Thunder early, fall by 10 in Class 1A quarterfinals

DES MOINES — In a game that finished at press time for the Southeast Iowa Union, the New London boys basketball team was eliminated from the Class 1A state basketball tournament by top-seeded Grand View Christian.
The Thunder held off a late Tiger run to pull out a 61-51 win in what was New London’s second-ever boys state basketball appearance.
New London led the game 12-6 early but Grand View cut the lead to 12-10 at the first horn, and the Thunder enjoyed a 25-22 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Grand View Christian put up 25 points to take a 50-37 lead after three quarters.
New London had the game within five points in the final minute, but the Tigers couldn’t pull off the upset.
Leading the Tigers offensively was Blaise Porter, who scored 15 points. Kade Benjamin put up 14. Brendan Richey had nine. Rylan Martin scored seven, and Leo Gebauer finished with six.
