NEW LONDON — New London and Winfield-Mt. Union/Columbus baseball came down to the wire in their Southeast Iowa Super Conference clash on Wednesday night.
The Wolves controlled for much of the contest, but the Tigers were able to rally in the sixth for the 7-5 victory.
Winfield-Mt. Union/Columbus had the bats going early and often in the first two innings.
The Wolves scored what would be a game-high four runs in the first frame and after shutting out the Tigers in the bottom of the inning, WMU/Columbus made it 5-0 after bringing one more home in the top of the second.
New London didn’t get discouraged though.
The Tigers quickly got back into it after scoring three runs of their own, cutting the Wolves’ lead to two, 5-3.
For the Wolves, the second inning marked their final run of the game.
WMU/Columbus did everything they could to hold New London off and for three innings they did just that.
Between the third and fifth inning, the Tigers brought just one additional run home to make it a 5-4 ballgame heading into the sixth.
After going scoreless through the top half of the sixth, the Wolves needed just six more outs to survive.
The Tigers had other ideas.
New London rallied in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, going from a one run deficit to a 7-5 advantage.
The Wolves got one final shot to send the game to extra innings or take the lead, but the Tiger defense got the three outs needed to win it.
New London moves to 3-8 with the victory.
For the Wolves, Riley Kaalberg, Cole Milks and Andrew Brown all had two hits. Milks had the lone RBI.
Preston Prior finished with one hit.
On the hill, Grant Watson and Lane Genkinger gave up a combined seven runs (seven earned) on eight hits, six walks and four strikeouts.
The Wolves drop to 3-5 with the loss.
