WEST POINT — New London Tiger softball’s season came to a close on Friday night in the Tigers Class 1A regional first-round bout against Holy Trinity Catholic.
The Tigers were bested by the Crusaders 10-5 in opening round action.
It was a valiant effort from New London, who just over a week prior lost 12-0 to the Crusaders on the same field.
New London changed the narrative of the previous meeting in the top of the first inning.
The Tiger’s Shaylee Brothersen hit a one-out single in the frame to get it started.
Natalie Burden then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Brothersen to second.
In the next at-bat, Sophie Malott drilled a double to left field to bring the first run home and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
HTC didn’t waste long to answer back though as they knotted the game in the bottom of the inning with an double and RBI single.
After a scoreless top of the second by the Tigers, the Crusaders took the lead and would never give it up in their half of the inning.
The Crusader’s Halie Cain hit a two RBI triple followed by an RBI single from Kayla Box to make it 4-1.
In the third, HTC added two more followed by three in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Despite the deficit, the Tigers weren’t going to go down without a fight.
New London senior’s Camryn Lair and Kaitlyn Lee both drove in a run in the sixth inning to make it 10-3.
A slew of errors added two more to the Tigers total before HTC was able to seal it.
With the loss, New London ends its season at 2-23.
Holy Trinity (11-11) moves on to play Sigourney (22-4) on Wednesday at Sigourney.
