NEW LONDON - There was no let down for the New London wrestling team on Thurdsay on Tuesday. Two days after going 1-2 in a marquee quadrangular against Mediapolis, Lisbon and West Liberty, the Tigers took care of business in their home quad, getting two wins.
The Tigers beat Lone Tree, 63-0, and Van Buren County 66-6. Van Buren also suffered a 24-12 loss against Lone Tree.
The Warriors and Lions were up first, while New London was scheduled to wrestle in the final two duals. Lone Tree picked up three pins in the dual. Van Buren's Bruce Claman and Carson Halbrook both won via forfeit, and there were eight double forfeits, leading to a low-scoring affair.
New London took on Lone Tree in the second dual, and it was dominance from the Tigers. Dominic Lopez, Boden Pickle and Jaxon Allen each had a pin and the Tigers won 11 matches to lead to a 63-point skunking.
'After wrestling ranked Lisbon and ranked West Liberty and always good Mediapoils, the intensity was kind of down at first, but I was really happy with how our guys picked it up,” coach Mark Chiri said. 'We didn't wrestle down. We just wrestled hard. I figured we might have a letdown after the packed gym up there.”
The Tigers kept the good vibes flowing against Van Buren. Josh Glendening, Pickle, Cameron Raines and Owen Reed each had a pin. Van Buren's only win was a win by forfeit from Claman.
After the meet was all done, Van Buren coach Brian Johnson said the youthful Warriors were just happy to get some matches under their belts.
'It's kind of what we expected,” Coach Johnson said. 'Right now we have seven wrestlers and five of them have never wrestled before. For five of them, it was their very first match ever, so we're just asking them to get better every week. They came out and put up a fight tonight, and that's all we wanted.”
The Tigers host their home tournament this Saturday, Dec. 7. Van Buren will be at Pekin's home tournament on Saturday.
