New London, Sigourney-Keota compete in regional duals

Both the New London and Sigourney-Keota wrestling teams took part in the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s regional wrestling duals on Tuesday night, and while neither team moved on from the regionals to state, the Tigers did scoop up one victory.

In a Class 1A regional at Lisbon, New London went 1-1 to close out the dual season. At Wilton, Sigourney-Keota went 0-1.

New London’s win came over Beckman Catholic. The Tigers took a forfeit-heavy dual 43-36.

The Tigers won every match that took place on the mat. 113-pounder Gage Burden and 182-pounder Josh Glendening each won via pinfall. Dominic Lopez won by technical fall at 152 pounds, and Mavy Pope won by major decision at 106.

The Tigers won five of the seven matches to take place on the mat against Lisbon, but they forfeited seven weights. Marcel Lopez (126), Dominic Lopez, Glendening and Trent Wilkerson (195) all won by decision. Burden scooped up a pin.

Sigrouney-Keota competed in a nearly-full dual against Alburnett. The Cobras won the first four matches, getting first-period pins from Aidan Schuster (182), Cade Streigle (195) and Conner Reed (285), and earning a forfeit win from Jayden Thompson (220), but the Pirates won the next nine matches.

The only other Sigourney-Keota victory came in the last match of the night. Jack Clarahan won by pinfall at 170 pounds.

After defeating Sigourney-Keota, Alburnett fell 39-34 to Wilton in the regional finals.
