New London, Sigourney-Keota ranked No. 7 in Gazette football poll

The Week 1 edition of The Gazette high school football poll is upon us, and a pair of Union area teams are slotted into the same spot in different classes, the lucky number seven.

New London in Class 8-Player and Sigourney-Keota in Class 1A are both ranked No. 7. The Tigers had 21 votes in the 8-Player poll, and the Cobras had 19 votes in Class 1A.

New London is coming off a dominant 52-6 win over Calamus-Wheatland in the season opener. Sigourney-Keota pulled out a 10-point comeback victory at Durant.

Three other area squads received votes in the polls. Mid-Prairie picked up four votes in Class 1A, Cardinal had three in Class A and Winfield-Mount Union tallied two in Class 8-Player.

There are just two unanimous No. 1 teams in the polls currently. Southeast Polk is the unanimous No. 1 in Class 5A, and Harlan earns that honor in Class 3A.

Class 4A is the only class with a split No. 1. Both Indianola and North Scott collected 57 votes.
