NEW LONDON — The offensive was firing on all cylinders Monday night in New London.
Both the Tigers and Panthers of Pekin eclipsed 10 runs in the pairs Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and South showdown.
New London and Pekin were neck and neck throughout, but it was the Tigers who had the last laugh with a two run walk off winner in the bottom of the seventh ending it 14-12.
Through two innings, it looked like New London might run away with it.
The Tigers rattled off seven runs in the first two frames, all while holding the Panthers to two.
But Pekin found it’s stride in the box in the top half the third, bringing home what would be a game high seven runs to give itself a 9-7 lead through two and a half innings.
It didn’t last.
New London, much like Pekin, put together its best offensive outing of the evening in the third. The Tigers nearly matched the Panthers’ total, finishing with five runs to retake the lead 12-9.
That would be the Tigers’ final runs for the next three innings.
On the contrary, Pekin was able to bring the game even with a pair of runs in fifth.
After a scoreless sixth inning by both teams, each team got a chance to win it in the seventh.
Pekin faced the pressure well and scored a pair of runs in the top half the seventh to take its first lead since the third inning spurt.
With the Tigers needing two runs to win it, Sophie Malott delivered. The senior notched a two RBI base hit to give New London the win.
With the victory New London improves to 2-9. Pekin still is searching for its second win of the season at 1-16.
