DONNELLSON — The New London baseball team had a tough night offensively in Tuesday's matchup against Central Lee, managing just two hits in a 4-0 road loss.
Despite hanging with their Southeast Iowa Super Conference South rivals through six innings, the Tigers couldn’t overcome a three-run first inning by the Hawks. The early burst proved to be all Central Lee needed.
Memphis Watson reached second base in the top of the first, but New London couldn’t capitalize and never got beyond second in the first four innings. Central Lee starter Chase Johnson was stellar on the mound, throwing five innings of one-hit baseball and striking out nine.
The tone was set early when sophomore Blake Davis launched a solo home run 360 feet over the center field fence. Central Lee added two more runs in the opening frame and tacked on one more in the fifth to round out the scoring.
Offensively, Gavin Strawhacker and Tate Welcher each tallied a hit for the Tigers. Watson pitched five innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs, and struck out four. He also swiped two bases. Strawhacker closed the game with one inning of relief, recording a strikeout.
Central Lee totaled eight hits on the night in the victory.
