New London takes 4th at Class 1A girls golf meet
Phillips shoots 81 on Day 2 to lead Tigers into top 4

AMES — The New London girls golf team didn’t just move up a spot on Day 2 at the Class 1A state meet, they did so with flying colors. The Tigers improved their score by 18 strokes on Wednesday to take fourth place with a final shot total of 773.
The Tigers ended Day 1 two strokes back of Boyer Valley for fourth place. After shooting 395 on Day 1, the Tigers shot 378 on Day 2 to beat Boyer Valley by 14 strokes and finish 11 back of third-place Grundy Center.
Freshman Taylor Phillips jumped eight strokes on Day 2. After shooting an 89 on Tuesday, Phillips shot 81 on Wednesday to finish tied for eighth place overall, at 170.
Fellow freshman Sophie Mallot shot a 99 on Day 1 and a 99 on Day 2 to finish at 196, which was 34th overall.
Junior Saige Barron (108, 99), senior Hannah Ortberg (101, 106) and sophomore Emma Nye (106, 101) all tied for 47th after shooting 207 each.
After shooting 119 on Day 1, freshman Isabelle Nye did not finish on Day 2.
