PACKWOOD - A copule of undefeated and ranked teams will meet in New Longon tonight (Tuesday) when No. 10 Notre Dame heads west for a marquee matchup with No. 7 New London. The Tigers stayed undefeated thanks to a 56-42 win over Pekin on Saturday, and the Nikes are unblemished themselves.
New London had to stage a bit of a comeback in their victory Saturday. Pekin led 18-11, but New London stormed back in the second half to take a 27-26 lead into halftime and put the game away in the third quarter with a 21-5 run.
The Tigers were up 48-31 after the dominant third quarter, and the Panthers' comeback effort fell well short in the final period.
Now New London turns its attention towards the only other ranked team in the division. In one of the biggest games in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference so far, the Tigers and Nikes will face off with the winner staying in first place.
New London is 4-0 overall this year and has three South Division wins, a dominant 81-38 win over Central Lee, a tight 63-62 win against Danville and a 67-37 blowout of Holy Trinity.
Notre Dame comes into the matchup 5-0 and with very similar wins in the division. The Nikes defeated Cardinal 68-52 and Central Lee 72-31 before winning their own grinder against Danville, 60-57. They've also beaten Holy Trinity 81-48.
The winner of tonight's game will be in control early of the division but will also put themselves in a good position to climb the Class 1A rankings early on this season.
