DES MOINES — Winfield-Mount Union’s Kohlby Newsom has spent plenty of time running in the big races, but he never could pull off the big win. Well, that is until Saturday at the 2025 Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet.
Newsom pulled out one of the most impressive runs of the weekend, storming down the back stretch to win the 800-meter run, crossing the tape in 1 minute, 53.83 seconds.
Newsom hadn’t finished better than 9th in an individual event at the state meet. That’s where he finished in last year’s 800, and he was determined to make up for lost time.
“I finished ninth at state cross-country last year, and I finished ninth at state cross-country this year,” Newsom said. “I took so many number nines, and all I wanted to do today was get that number one.”
The Winfield-Mount Union boys scored just 15 points at the state meet. Newsom had all 15, scoring 10 in the 800, and five in the 400-meter dash on Thursday, when he took fourth place.
“I’ve never been in a position where I get to celebrate after a win, in front of this many people,” Newsom said. “I had so much adrenaline through my heart.”
Newsome closed out his weekend with a ninth-place finish in the 1600 later on Saturday.
