NL, VBC dominate South baseball list
Tigers and Warriors place five players apiece on first team
The Southeast Iowa Super Conference released its All-Conference teams last week, and the South Division squad is filled with familiar names.
New London was the South Division champion and had the Coach of the Year. Brad Helmerson was given the honors along with his coaching staff.
New London’s Josh Catala and Ryan Wolf of Van Buren County shared the Player of the Year honor.
Catala, a junior, led the Tigers with a .462 batting average, three doubles, three triples and 15 RBIs. On the pitching mound, Catala went 4-1 with a 0.81 ERA and 31 strikeouts.
Wolf, a senior hit .461 for the Warriors. He had 18 doubles on the year, one triple, two home runs and 28 RBIs. He also went 2-3 in seven starts on the mound.
Both Van Buren County and New London landed five players on the first team.
Joining Catala were New London teammates Hecniel Rodriguez, Tucker Gibbar, Kooper Schulte and Carter Allen.
Rodriguez went 6-1 on the pitcher’s mound, clocking in at a 1.62 ERA and 51 strikeouts. He led New London in three major categories, smashing seven triples, five homers and 37 RBIs.
Gibbar hit .427 with nine doubles, three triples and 31 RBIs. Schulte hit .360 with four doubles, a triple and three RBIs, and also finished the year with a 0.00 ERA in just over eight innings. Allen hit .380 with six doubles, one triple, two home runs and 23 RBIs.
Wolf’s Van Buren County teammates Treyton Bainbridge, Taylor Sprouse, Casey Yochum and Jackson Manning all joined him on the first team.
Bainbridge batted .346 with four doubles, one triple, one homer and 21 RBIs. He also went 3-1 on the mound with a 2.89 ERA and 42 strikeouts. Sprouse had a solid year on the mound, going 5-3 with a 1.98 ERA and 54 strikeouts. He also reached double-digit RBIs, with 15.
Yochum hit .416 with five doubles, one triple, three homers and 18 RBIs this season. Manning hit .321 with eight RBIs.
Cardinal catcher Blaine Bryant represented the Comets on the first team. He hit .449 this ear for the Comets and finished the season with 10 doubles, one home run and 22 RBIs. He also had a 0.91 ERA in just under eight innings on the mound.
Cardinal had three players chosen to be on the South Division second team. Landon Becker, Kaleb Figueroa and Dawson Lewis were on that list.
New London’s Ryan Richey and Camden Kasel wound up on the second team, as did Van Buren County’s Lucas Fett and Bailey Roen.
Each team chose two honorable mentions. Cardinal’s honorable mentions were Tatum Telfer and Chance Randolph. New London’s were Seth Bailey and Brenden Richey, and Van Buren County chose Wyatt Mertens and Dylan Richardson.
