WASHINGTON — Shots just weren’t finding the net for the 10th-ranked Washington boys soccer team on Thursday night.
Despite getting off 18 shots against the visiting Burlington Grayhounds, Washington only put one past the line in a 2-1 Southeast Conference home loss.
The Demons found themselves in an early hole. Despite shooting against the win, Burlington struck quick with an early goal in the first half, and Washington’s shots on net all seemed to fall innocently into the hands of the Grayhound keeper.
Burlington made it 2-0 with a goal in the 51st minute, which put Washington even farther behind the 8-ball, but the Demons would cut that lead in half just 14 minutes later.
After a handball in the box, Washington’s Isaac Gentry finally got the Demons on the board on a penalty kick to cut the Burlington lead to 2-1. Unfortunately for the home fans, that’s all the Demons would get.
Brayan Arreola led Washington with six shots and three shots on goal in the loss. Lane Schrock had two shots on goal as well.
Will Gilchrist Brock made four saves in net for the Demons.
Washington is now 5-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play. The Demons will host Mt. Pleasant (3-4, 1-4) on Monday.
