MT. PLEASANT — The 11th-ranked (3A) Washington softball team continued its trek toward a Southeast Conference championship on Monday night, sweeping rival Mt. Pleasant in a road doubleheader.
Washington won both games via the mercy rule, taking Game 1, 19-5 in four innings, and Game 2, 8-0 in six.
Washington sent 18 batters to the plate in the opening frame of Game 1. The Demons scored a ridiculous 14 runs in their first at-bat, and despite a five-run Panther rally in the next two innings, Mt. Pleasant could never get back into it.
“The girls do a nice job playing with the lead,” said Washington head coach Ben Obermann. “You just try to treat like it’s a close game, because in this game, anything can happen.”
Washington’s Alyvia Anderson went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs in the win. Makenzie Messer was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs. Leighton Salazar was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Ella Greiner went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Natalie Hartman was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Reagan Miller had a double and two RBIs of her own.
Colbie Greiner went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the win. She also pitched two innings in the circle, with Halle Cuddeback stepping in for two shutout innings in relief.
Mt. Pleasant’s Jolynn Martin had a nice game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Parker Coleman was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Washington’s Bella Salazar controlled the game in the circle in Game 2. Salazar shut the Panthers out, throwing a complete-game four-hitter, and striking out seven batters.
“I just know my defense has my back behind me,” Salazar said.
Colbie Greiner had a huge Game 2, going 4-for-4 with a homer, a double and three RBIs. Ella Greiner was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Bella Salazar was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Mt. Pleasant’s Chaley Cook went 2-for-3 with two doubles in the loss.
“ (This game) should help the girls a lot,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Derek Coleman. “We left 11 or 12 girls on base, so we’re getting on base, and we’re hitting the ball. We just can’t finish.”
Washington moved to 19-6 overall and 11-0 in conference play with the win. The Demons are one conference win away from clinching a conference title.
“It’s so amazing,” said Bella Salazar. “I’m so excited to see what happens.”
Mt. Pleasant fell to 4-20 and 2-0.
