NEW LONDON — The red-hot Winfield-Mount Union football team knocked off the school that has had its number the most since the team moved to Class 8-Man a handful of years ago.
WMU simply dominated New London on Friday night, ending a seven-game losing streak to the Tigers with a 78-16 road victory.
“Our kids have had this one circled for a while,” said Wolves’ head coach Scott McCarty. We haven't beaten them since we both went 8-Man, so this has been a long time coming.“
It didn’t take long for WMU to show its muscle. The Wolves scored on a deep ball to Cam Buffington on their second play of the game.
In all, Buffington had three catches for 140 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Jake Edwards threw for 210 yards and four touchdowns on the day, including a 46-yard strike to Carter Loyd.
But it was the WMU running game that burned the Tigers the worst. Cole Milks, who moved out of the quarterback position this year, had five rushes for a ridiculous 170 yards and four touchdowns. He also nearly scored on a punt return.
“I felt really good, but it just feels really good to see our whole team click,” Milks said. “It feels good to get everyone out there and play as a team.”
Eli Miller ran for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Lane Genkinger had 52 yards and a score. Milks picked off one pass on defense, and Kael Johnson recovered one fumble.
New London’s Gavin Menke-Bailey did what he could to spark the Tiger offense. He went 11-for-20 throwing the ball, collecting 132 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Cale Westerback led the Tigers with three catches for 41 yards. Israel Lemley scored the longest touchdown, a 37-yard reception, and Brigham Porter had three catches for 30 yards.
New London ‘s defense was led by Menke-Bailey, who secured 5.5 tackles.
The Tigers are now looking at an 0-2 record with a road trip to last week’s No. 10 Iowa Valley upcoming. Second-ranked WMU will play in one of the biggest games in the state of Iowa when the Wolves host No. 5 WACO.
