MOUNT VERNON — It’s been a tough two game stretch for Washington football, facing back-to-back opponents who were some of the top teams in the state.
The Demons suffered a 35-0 loss to No. 8 Davenport Assumption last Friday night and this week they hit to road to Mount Vernon for a Class 3A District 4 matchup with the No. 4 Mustangs.
It was hard from the get go for Washington, as 2022 state runner-up Mount Vernon blistered out to a 27-0 lead through the opening quarter.
The Mustangs weren’t done there though, as they added 31 more to their total in the second quarter, giving them a 58-0 halftime lead over the Demons.
It was a deficit that Washington couldn’t overcome.
The Demons went scoreless once more through the third quarter and finally got on the board in the fourth with six points, but the Mustangs scored seven themselves to cap off the night.
Washington drops to 2-6 on the season with the loss. The Demons will play their final regular season game on Friday night when they host Fort Madison (5-3).
Mount Vernon has already clinched the 3A District 4 title as they have defeated every district opponent thus far with just one game left in the regular season.
