SIGOURNEY -- Fifth-ranked Sigourney-Keota gave tribute to the football team's Cobra nickname again this week, striking quickly to score in the first seconds of Friday's 48-13 Homecoming win over Class 1A District 6 foe Van Buren County.
VBC's first play was a fumbled snap that S-K's Jackson Droz recovered. S-K's next play was Colton Clarahan touchdown toss to Brady Duwa.
'It was an amazing throw and amazing catch,” S-K head coach Jared Jensen said. 'You couldn't draw up the start of a game any better than we started. Our defense controlled the game and our offensive line had its most consistent play this season.”
Duwa recovered VBC's second fumble. Six plays later, it was a TD pass from Cade Molyneux to Duwa. A VBC punt was returned 55 yards by Duwa for a TD. Sam Sieren scored the fourth TD. The Cobra D. led by Jack Clarahan's seven tackles (six solo) in the game, forced another punt to Duwa and he went 64 yards to the 6-yard line, then scored on a counter for a 35-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Warriors (1-2, 0-2) got 89 yards rushing and a touchdown from Sam Warth and Cayden Summers had 42 yards and a score. Treyton Bainbridge and Brant Tedrow had 7.5 tackles apiece for the Warriors.
'Our guys gave it their all,” VBC head coach Brian Johnson said. 'I think a few of our younger guys might have been in survival mode to get through it, but we still had guys doing good things and trying to get their job done.”
Homecoming can be distracting but the Cobras are a veteran team that knows when to focus.
'Wednesday was a parade and we had a really good practice,” Jensen said. 'We have such great support in our communities with the players' parents and there was pizza and gatorade for all 110 5-12 football players after practice.”
