WASHINGTON — Mid-Prairie and Washington volleyball squared off on Monday night in a Class 3A out of conference bout.
The No. 6 ranked Golden Hawks (11-2) came out victorious over the Demons (5-7) in a 3-0 sweep, 25-10, 25-22 and 25-18.
Mid-Prairie looked to be in midseason form and Washington only got better as the match went on despite the loss.
In set one, the Demons held just a single lead at 2-1. From then on out the Golden Hawks would never let the Demons get back on top.
“I think we are starting to find our groove,” Mid-Prairie junior Jovi Evans said. “The early season scrimmages really put us in a place to really take off to begin the season. We have been working really hard in practice.”
Washington was able to tie it at 5-5 and keep it within one at 8-7 after a Golden Hawks hit went long.
Mid-Prairie took sole control after that, amassing an 8-0 run to make it 16-7.
“I felt that there were times we didn’t take care of ourselves,” Washington head coach Aaron Six said. “In order to play against a quality team we have to play at our best level. There were too many times we were not at our best.”
The Demons scored just three more points the rest of the opening frame as the Golden Hawks took the early advantage.
In set two the Demons showed they weren’t going to go down easy.
After a close battle in the early stages of the second set, the Golden Hawks took what looked to be a commanding 20-14 lead late on a kill from Katelyn Harland.
However, a kill from the Demon’s Ella Greiner and an ace from Isabella Salazar kick started what was a 6-1 run to bring Washington back within one, 21-20.
An ace from Greiner eventually tied the game at 22-22, but kills from the Golden Hawks Jovi Evans and an ace from Jeorgia Evans ended it.
In set three, the Golden Hawks raced out to a 7-1 lead and they would never look back.
A kill from Taylor Miksch pulled the Demons within four at 15-11, but they would get no closer as the Golden Hawks took the victory with a win.
“We have have to play with confidence everytime we step on the floor,” Six said of his message to the team. “So much of it is within us to take advantage of things. We talked about getting back after it with conference play. We can’t have those mental breakdowns. When we are aggressive at the net we do things well.”
Harper Pacha led Mid-Prairie with nine kills in the win. Jovi Evans, Katelyn Harland and Callie Huber each had eight.
Evans had 19 assists, while Avery Helmuth added 15.
Defensively, Dakota Mitchell finished with 19 digs and Jeorgia Evans had 16.
For Washington, Leighton Messinger finished with a team-high eight kills and Ella Greiner had five.
Lauren Hinrichsen had 16 assists. In the digs department, Hinrichsen finished with 11.
