NEW LONDON — New London hosted its annual New London Tournament on Saturday and a handful of Union area squads took part, with one winning some hardware.
New London along with No. 8 Mid-Prairie, Winfield-Mt. Union and Van Buren County were the Union area teams to compete.
No. 15 West Burlington, Notre Dame, Louisa-Muscatine and English Valleys were featured as well.
New London, WMU, English Valleys and Louisa-Muscatine were in one pool with Notre Dame, Mid-Prairie, Van Buren County and West Burlington in the other.
Winning the day was the Golden Hawks of Mid-Prairie, who got a little revenge for the tournament title.
Mid-Prairie opened the tournament with a 2-0 sweep of Notre Dame 21-11 and 21-9.
The Golden Hawks then took on West Burlington, who gave them one of their four losses this season.
The last time the Golden Hawks and Falcons squared off was back in August at the Central Lee Tournament. The two squads split that time around.
This time the matchup was very similar.
West Burlington put together a pretty efficient performance against Mid-Prairie, picking up a two set win, 21-15 and 21-18.
That wasn’t the final time the two would play on the day.
Mid-Prairie followed the loss with two additional 2-0 victories over Van Buren County 21-13, 21-6 and Winfield-Mt. Union 21-19, 21-7 in the semifinals.
That set the Golden Hawks up with yet another matchup with the Falcons.
West Burlington continued its undefeated tournament streak by knocking off English Valleys in the semifinals for a spot in the final.
This time around, the Golden Hawks got the better of the Falcons.
Mid-Prairie won the first set 23-21 before falling in the second 21-14, setting up a third set winner take all.
The Golden Hawks were able to edge the Falcons 15-10 to win the title.
New London, Winfield-Mt. Union and English Valleys’s all defeated Louisa-Muscatine in the tournament, 2-0.
Winfield-Mt. Union narrowly downed English Valleys in a three set thriller. After losing the first set 21-19, the Wolves bounced back with two straight wins, 21-16 and 15-12.
Meanwhile, the host Tigers dropped their match with English Valleys, 2-1. New London took the first 21-14, but lost 21-12 and 15-6 in the second and third set.
New London did take down WMU in the two’s meeting, 2-1, by scores of 21-19, 9-21 and 15-9, but it wouldn’t be enough as the WMU took the pool title.
Van Buren County faced some tough competition on the day.
The Warrior’s didn’t win a set on the day, coupling their loss to Mid-Prairie with 2-0 losses to West Burlington, 21-17, 21-10 and Notre Dame, 21-16 and 21-14.
