WELLMAN — The Golden Hawks moved from No. 10 to No. 8 in the soccer coaches’ poll this week and stayed unbeaten at 3-0 with a rout of the visiting Tipton Tigers Tuesday 8-1.
Ethan Trimpe collected three goals in the match, and Zeus Fugate hit two. Tucker Miller and Noah Ford each put up a goal and an assist while Fugate and Trimpe added an assist each. Braden Hartley notched a goal, and Jarrett Hoffman provided an assist.
Mid-Prairie plays Friday at Cedar Valley Christian.
Hillcrest location helps Mid-Prairie win
KALONA — With four Hillcrest Academy girls on Mid-Prairie’s soccer team, the Golden Hawks played Tipton Tuesday at Hillcrest.
The team may want to play there more often after a 6-1 victory gave Tipton its first loss. The Hawks outshot the Tigers 27-12 and had a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Hillcrest student Esther Hughes connected with the back of the net twice with other goals by Katrina Curtiss, Loreli Lueck, Sophia Baker and Kaitlyn Martin.
Martin and Kina Miller each had an assist for Mid-Prairie, which is 2-1 and plays at Cedar Valley Christian Friday.
Columbus girls win, boys lose
COLUMBUS JUNCTION — The Wildcats won a girls soccer match against the visitors from Mediapolis Tuesday, 2-1, but the Columbus boys lost to the Bulldogs by the same score.
Both matches were tied at 1-1 when halftime happened.
The Columbus girls prevailed with freshman Alynna Leos in goal recording 10 saves.
Aaliyah Santos provided the first goal, and Juvixsa Valdez hit the winning tally 15 minutes into the second half.
The Wildcats outshot the Bullettes 28-10. Valdez had 13 of the 28 shots. Lizbeth Paz had an assist.
“It was an ugly win,” Columbus coach Alfredo Pineda said. “We struggled all game, not aggressive enough, bad passing, bad communication. I was glad the game was over, and we’re moving on to Friday with a better team mentality.”
Each Columbus team has a 2-1 record. The girls play at Tipton Friday. The boys play at Highland today.
