No. 8 New London heaves Hawks

NEW LONDON — The eighth-ranked (1A) Tigers opened up Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division play with a five-set win over Central Lee. The Tigers topped the Hawks 25-20, 17-25, 25-23, 25-22.
Paris Wilka led New London with 12 kills in the win. Sophie Malott had 29 digs. Aliyah Christensen dished out 21 assists, and Emma Nye had two service aces.
Mt. Pleasant falls at Albia
ALBIA — Mt. Pleasant couldn’t get anything going in a nonconference match at Albia. The Blue Demons swept the Panthers 25-17, 25-13, 25-11.
Mid-Prairie downed in 4
WEST BRANCH — Mid-Prairie lost its first match of the year, a four-setter at West Branch. The Golden Hawks fell 25-13, 25-14, 21-25, 25-23.
Ella Groenwold’s 12 kills paced the Golden Hawks. Dakota Mitchell finished the night with 21 digs.
Heartbreak for Hillcrest
LONE TREE — Hillcrest Academy nearly had its first win of the year, but it wasn’t meant to be for the Ravens in a five-set loss. Lone Tree came out victorious, 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 15-9.
Esther Hughes had 11 kills to lead Hillcrest. Evelyn Gerber had 17 digs, and Malia Yoder finished with four aces.
Columbus swept in Mediapolis
MEDIAPOLIS — Columbus failed to scoop up a SEISC North Division win, falling in three sets at Mediapolis, 25-13, 27-25 and 25-16.
Victoria Howell had seven kills and five digs in the loss. Sera Vela dished out 12 assists.
WACO loses 2-setter
KEOKUK — WACO couldn’t get anything going in a two-set loss at Keokuk. The Chiefs ousted the Warriors 25-12 and 25-15.
Emma Wagler led the Warriors with six kills. Grace Coble dished out 10 assists, and Jocelyn Fulton had 10 digs.
Van Buren County falters
KEOSAUQUA — Van Buren County fell at home to SEISC South Division rival West Burlington. The Falcons swept the Warriorrs 25-11, 25-14, 25-16.
Kadence Nusbaum led the Warriors with five kills. Annabelle Cormier dished out five assists, and Shea Scott had 12 digs.
Cardinal blanked at No. 1 Notre Dame
BURLINGTON — Class 1A’s top-ranked team, Notre Dame, swept Cardinal in a SEISC South Division game. The Nikes won 25-9, 25-2 and 25-12.
Cardinal’s Emma Becker, Sydney Pickrell and Kaylyn Chapin each had one kill. Josie Courtney led the defense with 11 digs.
