BLOOMFIELD ? With a developing history of comebacks and a deficit cut to seven in the fourth quarter, the Fairfield boys? basketball team seemingly had the Mustangs right where it wanted them.
A few mini-runs by Fairfield never turned into an all-out comeback, however, as Davis County (3-3) silenced the Trojans with an 81-65 victory in Bloomfield Tuesday night.
Davis County took advantage of hot shooting early to grab a 46-34 halftime lead and kept the pressure on to hold a 10-point advantage at the end of three quarters.
Fairfield carved the lead down to 63-56 in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs sped away for the win with an 8-1 scoring run. Fairfield?s struggles with turnovers and the Mustangs? second-chance opportunities served as the final nails in Fairfield?s coffin.
?The kids played hard, they just had too many mistakes,? said Fairfield head coach Tyler Miklo. ?We didn?t guard well enough to get the win. [Davis County] liked to attack, and our half court defense wasn?t good enough tonight.?
Brent Buch led Fairfield with 19 points and four assists. Davis Lowenberg scored 13 points, including a few putbacks off three offensive boards, followed by Dillon Fry with 12 points and Braz Johnson with seven. Nik Fitch had six points and three steals, while Spencer Peterman scored four. Cody Kool scored four points and led the Trojans with 12 boards.
The Trojans (2-4, 0-1 SEC) will visit West Branch Monday before a two-week hiatus carries them into the new year.
