FAIRFIELD — After a second set loss to Fort Madison on Tuesday night, the Fairfield volleyball team decided to take it up a notch.
Tied 1-1 in sets, the Trojans turned up the heat on the Bloodhounds in the final two games, giving up just 20 points total in back-to-back blowout sets, to win in 4.
After a 25-21 first set win, Fairfield dropped the second game 25-19 to make it a best of three series. From that point on, it was all Trojans.
Fairfield took Game 3 in the biggest blowout of the night, winning 25-9. The next was a carbon copy of the last, as the Trojans finished off the Bloodhounds 25-11.
“We started out a little slow, overall,” said Fairfield head coach Vicki Rebling. “We made a few adjustments, and it mattered.”
It was a balanced attack from the Trojans again, with four different hitters collecting nine or more kills. The leader in that clubhouse was Leah Helmick, who finished with 13.
Jaden Haynes put up 10 kills in the win. Natalie Steele and Maddy Martin each had nine, and Elyse Setterstrom finished with six.
“It’s really nice to mix up plays with everyone, so the defense doesn’t know what we’re running,” Martin said. “It’s really nice to have a lot of options.”
Faith Jones dished out 40 assists and found her way to a five-kill game herself. Isabel McCready finished with 21 digs, and Mallory Wigle hit double digits as well, with 10 digs.
The win brought Fairfield to 5-2 overall this season. The Trojans are now tied in the lead in the Southeast Conference with a 1-0 record, right beside both Washington and Burlington.
