WASHINGTON — Mid-Prairie star Maddie Nonnenmann is now in an exclusive club. The Golden Hawks’ leading scorer eclipsed 1,000 points on Monday night in a 47-27 victory at Washington.
“It feels great,” Nonnenmann said. “It makes me feel really thankful for the community, and my team. I couldn't get there without them.”
Nonnenmann, who scores 16.5 points per game, had a tough time getting the 14 she needed to hit the mark. Washington’s defense kept her relatively at bay, but with 2:35 left in the fourth quarter, the senior hit a righty layup to move past the mark.
“Everyone wanted to get it,” Nonnenmann said. “We were all as a team trying to feed me the ball and get those 14 points I needed. It was getting intense toward the end.”
And it was a good thing she did. Traveling Golden Hawks fans, players and coaches both erupted and let out a sigh of relief when Nonnenmann reached the mark before the game’s end.
“I think I might have been the most nervous I've been all year,” joked Mid-Prairie head coach Daniel Hershberger.
Mid-Prairie led 13-2 after one quarter, 21-11 at halftime and 38-18 after three. The loss for Washington snapped a two-game winning streak.
“We got beat by a good team tonight,” said Washington coach Shannon Rugg. “They've won 15 games, they have a girl who scored 1,00 points. Tonight just wasn't our night.”
Nonnenmann ended the night with 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Mid-Prairie. Amara Jones had 11 points and five steals. Nora Pennington scored seven points. Landry Pacha had four. Cana Rediger scored three. Maya Nonnenmann, Halli Hershberger and Josie Greiner scored two each, and Kylie Reinier had one.
Washington was led by a seven-point performance from Kaylin Long. Kendall Hinrichsen, Lauren Hinrichsen, Maci Williams and Alex Murphy all had four. Taylor Bartholomew and Elyse Hunt both finished with two.
Mid-Prairie moved to 13-6 with the win. Washington is now 3-14.
