FAIRFIELD — Fairfield senior Laney Norris signed her letter of intent to attend and play softball at Simpson College last week, inking her name in front of friends, family and coaches.
Norris will be heading to Indianola next school year to continue her softball career. She’ll be following in the footsteps of her older sister Jenna, who will be a junior next season for the Storm.
“It's close to family, and my sister is up there and everything,” Norris said. “It will be nice to play with her again, and to meet new people.”
Norris will be focused on pitching at Simpson, which has been her main forte since she was just a freshman. As a junior, Norris picked up seven wins on the season, which accounted for 70 percent of the team’s victories. She had a 5.97 ERA and struck out a team-high 44 batters.
Norris may also spend some time in the field and at the plate. This year in the batter’s box, Norris hit .314 with a team-high 24 RBIs.
Norris, who is undecided on a major, says going to play on the same team as her sister did play a big factor in choosing Simpson.
“I've watched her play for the last two years that she's been there,” Norris said. “The environment is so great. The coach is awesome, and I'm just really excited.”
Last spring, the Simpson softball team went 27-13 overall with a 9-7 conference record. The Storm will begin play in mid-February this season.
