FORT MADISON ? With the Trojans trailing headed into the fourth quarter Friday, senior Tori Ogden found her can?t-miss spot 15 feet from the rim.
Ogden, shooting a total of 12 free throws in the final quarter, missed her first attempt but sank the next 11 to lift Fairfield past Fort Madison, 58-49, in the regular season finale.
?That was a really good win for us. A lot of good performances out of the gals,? said Fairfield head coach Mick Flattery. ?It was a good way to end things going into the tournament.?
Down 47-46 with five minutes remaining, the Trojans (8-13, 2-6 SEC) scored six straight points ? a good portion of which were Ogden free throws ? and allowed just three points the rest of the contest.
Overall, Ogden finished with 22 points, two steals and two assists as the Trojans now find themselves riding a two-game winning streak into the first round of regional play.
The win not only gives Fairfield a little extra boost when it needs one most, but it also helped the team meet several goals. The Trojans surpassed last year?s win total of seven, finished fourth outright in the Southeast Conference and won a majority of the Senior Games to close the season.
Although Ogden made the most noise from the charity stripe, her entire team made a habit of getting to the line, where they went 19-for-30. Perhaps more impressive, 14 of the Trojans? 16 field goals were off assists.
?Overall great teamwork by the gals. If they didn?t create something for themselves they were creating it for the other girls,? said Flattery. ?They had such crisp passing and also got some really good looks from the 3-point line.?
Fairfield?s Sidney Baumann tallied 15 points with two 3s, five boards, three steals and three assists. Serena Ward recorded eight points and five rebounds, Brittany Kurtz scored six points and Marisa Repp sustained the offense with five assists.
Fairfield opens regional play Wednesday at home vs. Oskaloosa. Although the Indians won in the two teams? only meeting this year, Flattery expects a brand new ball game.
?We?re all 0-0 now so you can all throw your records out. We haven?t seen Osky since November and at this point in the year every team is different,? he said.
FAIRFIELD ? Ogden 22, Baumann 15, Ward 8, Kurtz 6, Repp 3, Neil 2, Thompson 2, Totals 16 FG/58 points
3-point goals ? Ogden 3, Baumann 2, Ward 1, Repp 1. Rebounds ? Baumann 5, Ward 5, Kurtz 4, Neil 3. Assists ? Repp 5, Baumann 3, Ogden 2, Ward 2. Steals ? Baumann 3, Ogden 2.
