COLUMBUS JUNCTION — The opening test for the Columbus girls basketball team’s postseason run was past with flying colors on Tuesday night.
The Wildcats were in control from the tip in the Class 2A Region 2 opener against West Burlington, knocking the Falcons out 48-28.
“I was a little concerned with 10 days off in between games, but you can't beat experience,” said Columbus head coach Kasey Keltner. “These kids have played in a lot of games.”
The Wildcats scored the first 11 points in the game and led 14-4 after one quarter. By halftime, Columbus was up 26-6.
“I think that's something we're really good at, is coming out confident,” said Columbus senior Lilly Coil. “I think we expected that to happen.”
Columbus led 37-13 after three quarters. West Burlington scored over half their points in the fourth.
Coil scored 15 points to lead the Wildcats. Frannie Sosa finished the night with 14, to give Columbus two double-digit scorers.
“We've just been playing here for so long,” Sosa said. “We love our community, and we just want to show them what we can do.”
Ariana Vergara finished with eight points. Isabel Rendon had five. Aracely Garza, Ellie Sanders and Kymila Bacon scored two points each.
Columbus (18-4) will host Danville in Friday night’s regional semifinals. The winner will either play top-seeded Regina or Cascade five days later for a spot at the state tournament.
