For the second-straight season, Columbus will have a representative at the Class 2A girls? golf state meet.
This time, senior Kortney Orr has her eyes on finishing among the best.
?Last year I went up with the idea of, ?well, I made it, let?s just see what happens,?? Orr said. ?This year I really want to get in the top 10. That?s my goal.?
Orr currently sits 18th among Class 2A individuals with an average of 49.79 strokes per nine holes, with eight girls within two strokes of that average.
Orr knows she?ll be paired with those other talented performers at the state meet, and she is relishing the opportunity to compete with them.
?I definitely feel that I play a lot better when I play with tougher competition,? Orr said. ?That helps me perfect my game better. I?m excited about that challenge.?
To get to her second-straight state meet, Orr finished in third place in her regional tournament, and coming down the stretch, feels that she is playing some of her best golf at the end of the season.
?I played well,? Orr said. ?All season I had been in my head and worried about everything. At regionals, I played for myself and didn?t have to worry about anything. I would have really liked to go with my team (who missed state qualification by four strokes), and we were really disappointed that we didn?t make it, but it was nice to earn the spot.?
Orr noted that she hopes to play a round at the state site in Granger before the tournament, but she is most looking forward to being back in the big tournament atmosphere.
?My favorite part is just being a part of the atmosphere and being able to represent my community and make them proud,? Orr said.
The Class 2A girls? golf tournament will begin on Tuesday.
