KEOKUK - At the end of regulation a 3-pointer at the buzzer goes in. At the end of overtime, a 3-pointer at the buzzer goes out.
That was the outcome of a Southeast Conference basketball game Saturday for the Fairfield girls, who were defeated by Keokuk, 49-46.
Keokuk led 15-8 at the end of the first quarter and 23-12 at halftime but Fairfield's 15-3 third period made the deficit 27-26 and it was tied at 42 to start overtime. The loss puts the Trojans into third place in the SEC at 6-4, 9-8 overall while Keokuk is 7-3, 10-7.
Delaney Breen took both of the buzzer beaters and finished with 13 points, four rebounds and four steals. Fairfield led 37-34, then trailed 42-39 when Keokuk missed a free throw with 7 seconds left to give Breen the tying shot. In overtime, a missed Trojan shot tied at 42 with 14 seconds left led to a made Keokuk free throw then a miss but an offensive rebound meant two made free throws.
Danielle Breen had 14 points and two assists in the loss. Mallory Lyon and Olivia Jones pulled in eight rebounds each and Jones pushed out four assists. Hannah Simpson and Brynley Allison tallied six points apiece.
The Class 4A postseason starts Wednesday at home against Burlington.
