DES MOINES — Seven area wrestlers placed at the 2025 state wrestling tournament in Des Moines, but that wasn’t all the Union area had going for it.
In total, 16 area wrestlers hit the mat. Here is how the 10 non-place winners fared at Wells Fargo Arena.
Four Fairfield wrestlers failed to place at state, though that doesn’t mean the Trojans didn’t scoop up some victories.
Dain Burkhart went 2-2 in the Class 2A, 175-pound bracket. Dre Smithburg was 1-2 at 215. Both Alex Hudson, at 285, and Zandrik Allison, at 144, failed to pick up any victories.
While New London’s Gage Burden did place, Kane Forseen failed to at 1A-126. Forseen did have two wins, going 2-2 for the Tigers.
Highland’s Landon Bell, who got in the field despite a third-place finish at districts, went 2-2 in the Class 1A, 106-pound bracket. Teammate Cash Cole was also 2-2, getting two pins in the 113-pound bracket. Tyler Pierson went 0-2 at 132 pounds.
Wrestling in the same bracket as Cole, Van Buren County’s Leo Jirak went 1-2, representing the Warriors at 1A-106.
Sigourney-Keota’s Owen Menke won one match in the Class 1A, 285-pound bracket. Menke won his opener via tech fall before falling in his next two matches.
