MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant baseball team is officially streaking. The Panthers won three games in two days on Monday and Tuesday, and the team has now won six-straight games, including five in league play.
The Panthers started the week off with two wins in Keokuk. Mt. Pleasant toppled Keokuk 7-1 in Game 1 and 13-3 in Game 2. Then on Tuesday, Cooper Coleman’s walk-off hit sent the Panthers past Oskaloosa, 7-6.
In Game 1 against Keokuk, the Panthers only needed eight hits to score seven runs. Brayton Hutson had a huge game, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the team.
Payson Coleman went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Zach Newton was 1-for-3 with a double. J.C. Sitar and Jason Rich each knocked in runs.
Ben Newton controlled the Keokuk lineup in Game 1, throwing seven innings and giving up just one unearned run on five hits and two hit batters. He struck out 10 Chiefs.
Sitar went wild in Game 2, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Carson Andreasen, Payton Walker, Payton Hagans and Payson Coleman all had RBIs.
Zach Newton picked up the Game 2 win, throwing 4.2 innings and struck out eight batters while giving up just three earned runs on two hits and three walks. Liam Marshall threw 1.1 shutout innings in relief.
A topsy-turvy game took a big turn on Tuesday against Oskaloosa. Mt. Pleasant led 5-3 after a tiebreaking two-run sixth, but the Indians scored three in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead.
Mt. Pleasant rallied back with two in its final at-bat, including the game-winning hit by Cooper Coleman, who had just scored the game-winning run one week earlier in a walk-off win over Washington.
Andreasen, Ben Newton and Cooper Coleman each had two hits and an RBI in the win over Oskaloosa. Hagans and Payson Coleman each knocked in one.
Mt. Pleasant (9-2, 5-0) is still alone atop the SEC heading into a Thursday night home game with Keokuk (3-4, 1-4).
