MT. PLEASANT - The Mt. Pleasant boys basketball team went into Monday night looking for its first win of the season, while also trying to hand Notre Dame its first loss. Neither would be the case, as the Nikes ran past the Panthers 72-44.
Mt. Pleasant struggled to handle the hot-shooting Nikes early. Notre Dame jumped out to a 20-8 lead after one quarter, and led 36-20 at halftime, thanks in part to a tremendous scoring effort from guard Shay Stephens, who scored 15 of his own in the first two quarters.
“They have extremely talented guards,” Mt. Pleasant head coach Eric Rawson said. “Stephens really makes them go.”
Mt. Pleasant couldn’t win a quarter against the unbeaten Nikes. Notre Dame outscored the Panthers 36-24 in the final two periods.
Noah Lange scored 12 points to lead Mt. Pleasant. Ryan Helling and Ian Reid each scored six. Keagan Heaton and Aiden Humble finished with five each. Kellen Kohorst, Brody Clark, Colton Syfert, Shawden Turner and Cadin Beavers each finished with two.
Mt. Pleasant is now 0-3 overall. The Panthers will try to knock off Fort Madison on the road in Southeast Conference play on Friday night. Both teams come into the game 0-1 in the conference.
“It’s going to be a dogfight inside the league,” Rawson said. Fort Madison is really big this year, and extremely tough at home, so we’ll see how it goes.”
